Isn't the AC in itself the exact reverse of the universe, especially in terms of entropy? Or is it maybe evenĪ mirror that kind of might be sacrificing itself for the new universe? I mean, if i got this right, the computer would have to be the most integrated and logical and orderly thing there is to be able to start that process and it would therefore be the exact opposite of complete chaos. Second, which is the real headache for me and maybe too wound up in the hypothetics of the story. There are two questions I'm unclear about and I'm not sure if this is just open to interpretation or maybe i'm just not catching something here.įirst, does Asimov imply that it's not really about learning how to reverse entropy, but rather about having all the possible data available? The answer basically being a restart of the universe ignited by AC ( "LET THERE BE LIGHT"). Now it starts correlating and integrating all the information to answer the last question.

Then matter and energy, as well as space and time come to an end and there is only AC (Multivac) in hyperspace, having now collected all data. But until the last human being is swallowed by the machine into hyperspace (which i'd guess is in relation to the material space either informationless or in the last moments filled with all the information there is? Might be important to enlighten me here) and becomes one with it, the computer is not able to answer the question because "THERE IS AS YET INSUFFICIENT DATA FOR A MEANINGFUL ANSWER".

To kinda rewind here (and for simplicity I'm gonna leave out the humans here), this is about the human-developed AI Multivac which is basically and most relevantly to the story tasked with answering the question of how to reverse entropy as to prolong the death of the universe. So I have to do an interpretation and analysis of the short-story The Last Question (1957) by Isaac Asimov and since I need to extract some concepts out of the story I've been a little irritated about the role of the AI Multivac in contrast to the state of the universe as a whole.
